I've been out of town for the last couple of weeks and headed out again today for another two weeks. I'm teaching a workshop in East Texas next week so headed out to work on some paintings. I'm out of town for another few days cleaning out a nightmare of a studio...so thought I'd post an older piece...this was painted from a trip to Ouray. Tomorrow I'll be taking a one day workshop with my wonderful friend Suzann Cromer...I'm wanting to do some sculptures of all of my beautiful grandbabies...so hope to have something to post in the next day or two.

This is a little watercolor study of some pink roses...I think I took it a little far in some places and not far enough in others...in other words I wished I had left it alone after my first original wash...I was much happier with it before.

Painting from Yellowstone

This is an older painting I did from Yellowstone. I don't do alot of large paintings...this is a 28X40...I've attempted this painting so many times I've lost count. Thinking about trying this in a smaller format...I tend to tighten up with larger pieces and lose the freshness that I shoot for. Might make another attempt but much smaller....jury is still out on this one!

This is a painting I've done before but I think it's okay to paint things over and over...for me with the hopes of improving on the subject. Red is such a challenge for me to get the light without getting chalky, haven't quite got it figured yet. This was painted on a 11X14 gessoed board.

Shame on me...didn't take advantage of the beautiful day we had today to paint out but did this from a photo I took a few years back. I apologize for the awful photograph, the painting is not this warm (took on alot of orange, poor lighting) I might have to repost this tomorrow, and once I sleep on it may go back in and make some changes. Obviously not a rock painter, but set up this as a challenge so.....didn't really succeed but thought I'd share my attempt anyway.

This was done from a photo I had taken in Ouray, CO. It was the first snow and was so beautiful! It was like a blizzard and you really couldn't paint out so lots of photos.

This is a study of simple shapes and bold colors. I had so much fun with this one, it went very quickly, limited palette, big brush loaded with color!

This is Mary Beth and what a great model she was! I didn't get it finished in the time that I had but I do like it sort of in this unfinished stage. Or truth be known I really didn't want to finish it from the photos that I took for fear I'd tighten up. This was done in a workshop and actually set her up outdoors.

I wanted fast results and a more painterly look. This was done with a conte pastel pencil, my fingers, paper towel, and eraser. Now all that said, I got into too much detail - lost that loose and lost edge work I invisioned. I was working so hard to get the likeness that I lost the overall feeling of what I had in mind. But I am pretty happy with it and think I'll give it another go!

Keeping my two beautiful grandbabies for a couple of days so probably won't get a chance to paint or post anything the next few days. So thought I'd post this 24X36 I did from Ouray, CO a while back. I don't usually paint this large so this was a challenge for me but was pretty happy with the results.

Relief

This is my first relief - always wanted to design and make a set of plates and platters, so through my friend Suzann she taught and walked me thru the process - I wished I had spent more time on the figure (not sure that it reads well in this photograph) and then the glazes-you never know what you're gonna get - wanted more of the golden glaze to bleed out more so didn't really get what I was shooting for. This was really hard but alot of fun at the same time. Believe I'll give this another shot!

This is an 8X10 pastel done on sanded paper from a larger painting. One of the things that I learned from working in pastels is that it taught me alot about color. I'm pretty pleased with it and may use it as a study for a larger oil painting.

Thought I'd introduce you all to another love of mine. These were done awhile back in a workshop. We worked from life. I've always wanted to sculpt with the thought it would help me in my drawing and painting of portraits and the figure. I'm working on a piece right now of just the torso. These are done in water base clay - I've had some wonderful help from a very close and dear friend and WONDERFUL artist Suzann Crommer - check out her blog. She's the best!

This is a still life I did as a demo.(A while back) I think it turned out pretty well considering the pressure of just a few hours to try and pull a painting off. I think there's more I could do but pretty happy with it as is - which really means I'm afraid to go back into it for fear of it going south on me.
